A mala helps concentrate the mind while doing japa (mantra repetition). A person devoted to the repetition of the five syllable mantra, Om Namah Shivaya, is a perfect and noble being. When mantra is recited on rudraksha, spiritual merit is multiplied by the hundreds of thousands.
A mala of 108 beads is most excellent and bestows the grace and blessings of Shiva. A mala of 100 beads is excellent and protects the wearer. A garland of 50 beads is lucky and 54 beads sustain health. A rosary of 30 beads bestows wealth, 27 beads yield spiritual nourishment, 25 beads grant salvation and 15 beads confer psychic gifts.
Using the thumb during repetition of the mantra grants salvation. Using the index finger destroys enemies, using the middle finger confers wealth and using the ring finger brings peace and calm.
