It began with Paul, Madeline and Memphis Kelly singing an original composition and ended in a John Masterton-inspired rock n roll frenzy: this was Joshua’s Den on June 8th.
It was a warm night for everyone there. As well as Pop and Selma’s hospitality and good food (and fantastic coffee and fine wine and great cakes), the ever-evolving Mighty Shiva Band lit up everyone’s hearts. They played beneath a theatrical backdrop of hanging stars and warm mood lighting.
Highlights included Swamiji singing the 60s classic Hully Gully. Devi Ma followed this by leading the band (and the audience) in Doo Ron Ron. Simon wowed us with his guitar stylings for We Gotta Groove and Jo Hughson knocked us out with I Love Rock n Roll (hey, at least she’s honest). But there was a tie for play of the day: Evan's trumpet solo in Ring of Fire was a scorching debut. But was it better than that of Steve Matich, who pulled out all stops to deliver the classic, Pretty Woman?
But the night wasn’t just about the music: it was about having fun, too! There was a raffle, with prizes graciously donated by local businesses. There were conga lines and cheering, and for the final songs, the café became a dance floor. Audience and Artist merged into one.
