Satsang Interfaith Series - Jewish Mysticism Saturday 15 August 2009
Tonight was the 3rd Interfaith Satsang on the Mystic Heart of Religion. Swamiji said that a mystic has a direct experience of God or a higher power, ‘It’s not an intellectual experience, but a direct experience’. Swamiji says that the purpose of this interfaith series is to find the common core at the heart of each religion. Tonight’s topic was Jewish Mysticism. The mystic school of Judaism came to be known as the Kabbalah, which is an oral tradition. Swamiji said, ‘the Kabbalah said this world is a reflection of the higher reality. Hidden in this world are sparks of divinity’.
The guest speaker was Rabbi Fred Morgan, the senior Rabbi of Temple Beth Israel in St Kilda, Melbourne. Rabbi Fred said, ‘the aim of Jewish spirituality is to repair and heal the world. If the world is broken then God is broken. It’s our role to bring it back together’. Rabbi Fred spoke about the importance of wearing a Tallit (Jewish prayer cloth) during worship. He said the four tassels on each corner act as a physical reminder of God. They are tied in a certain way to spell out the unpronounceable name of God.
Swamiji then leaded us into meditation and we had the opportunity to meet Swamiji and Rabbi Fred after meditation.
