Gautie’s Photography Exhibition December 2008
The hall at Kailas was turned into a beautiful art gallery on Sunday 7th December as we held a special fundraising exhibition featuring stunning Melbourne cityscape photographs by Robert (Gautie) Adair Westfield.
Swamiji began proceedings by welcoming guests and saying how Gautie is a valued and much loved member of our ashram community. He then handed over to Isobel (Lilavati) Crombie who told how she had first met Gautie as part of her work as Senior Curator of Photography at the NGV. She then contextualised his practice for the crowd by talking about the cityscape genre in photography. Isobel mentioned that Gauti was inspired by the French photographer Eugene Atget who had wanted to visually 'save' old Paris when that city was undergoing a massive transformation. Like Atget, Gautie too was impelled to photograph places around Melbourne before they were changed. Isobel concluded by saying "Gautie's striking photographs help define the spirit of Melbourne. He loves this city and his work is infused with that love". Gautie then told the story of his favourite subject, the iconic 'Skipping Girl', which is one of the world's finest neon works before thanking everyone who had helped realise the exhibition, most notably Swamiji and Ma Devi for their support.
The large crowd then had a chance to view the photographs and enjoy refreshments in what was a very happy and touching opportunity to celebrate Gautie and his art.
