The passing of a great saint is, paradoxically, a cause for celebration in the Hindu tradition as it marks their mahasamadhi or full absorption into cosmic consciousness. It is because of this that we honoured the passing of the ‘grand-father’ of our Siddha tradition on Saturday 11th August: the great, god-realised being Bhagawan Nityananda. Swamiji began the evening by saying that to celebrate Bhagawan is to celebrate the space of consciousness that he was in touch with constantly. Many of the people in Satsang had traveled with Swamiji to Ganeshpuri (where Bhagawan lived) earlier in the year and so the feeling of our personal relationship with this Great Being was palpable. As part of the evening we saw a remarkable video taken of Bhagawan in the 1950s and narrated by Baba Mutktananda’s secretary Amma which showed him walking around his home, Kailas Nivas. Swamiji noted that although he spoke little and was sometimes hard to understand, the presence of this unique saint was so powerful and transformative that it can put us into the space of consciousness even today.
